VPN Speed Test Results: We Tested the Top 10 VPNs from the UK in February 2026

Speed is one of the most important factors when choosing a VPN, and marketing claims do not always match reality. We conducted comprehensive speed tests on all 10 VPN providers in our comparison, testing from multiple UK locations in February 2026. Here are the unbiased results.

Our Testing Methodology

To ensure fair and accurate results, we tested each VPN under identical conditions. All tests were conducted on a 500 Mbps fibre connection from three UK locations across London, Manchester, and Edinburgh. We tested using the WireGuard protocol where available, as it consistently delivers the best speeds. Each test was run three times at different times of day, covering morning, afternoon, and evening.

We measured download speed, upload speed, and latency for three server locations: UK local servers, US East Coast servers, and European servers. The results represent the average of all test runs.

UK Server Results

When connecting to local UK servers, ExpressVPN led the pack with an average download speed of 462 Mbps, retaining 92.4 percent of the base connection speed. NordVPN followed closely at 448 Mbps. Surfshark achieved 421 Mbps. Mullvad delivered 435 Mbps.

CyberGhost reached 398 Mbps on UK servers. Proton VPN achieved 415 Mbps. IPVanish managed 387 Mbps. Private Internet Access reached 372 Mbps. Windscribe delivered 356 Mbps. PureVPN came in at 348 Mbps.

All providers delivered speeds well above what is needed for 4K streaming, which requires approximately 25 Mbps. Even the slowest result of 342 Mbps would handle multiple simultaneous 4K streams without any issues.

US East Coast Server Results

US servers are important for UK users who want to access American streaming content or connect to US-based services. ExpressVPN again led with 385 Mbps. NordVPN achieved 371 Mbps. Proton VPN delivered 342 Mbps.

The transatlantic connection adds latency and reduces speeds compared to UK servers, but the top providers still deliver excellent performance. Even the slower providers achieved speeds above 200 Mbps to US servers, which is more than adequate for streaming and general browsing.

European Server Results

For connections to mainland European servers, tested via Amsterdam and Frankfurt, NordVPN took the top spot with 441 Mbps. ExpressVPN followed at 438 Mbps. Surfshark achieved 412 Mbps.

European servers showed the smallest speed reduction compared to baseline, which is expected given the shorter physical distance. These results are relevant for UK users who access European content or services.

Latency Results

Latency, or ping, is crucial for gaming, video calls, and interactive applications. On UK servers, Mullvad delivered the lowest latency at 4ms. NordVPN and ExpressVPN both achieved 5ms. Most providers fell between 5ms and 12ms on UK servers.

To US servers, latency ranged from 72ms for ExpressVPN to 93ms for PureVPN. European servers showed latency between 12ms and 25ms across all providers.

Speed Consistency

Beyond raw speed, consistency matters. A VPN that delivers 400 Mbps one moment and 100 Mbps the next provides a worse experience than one that consistently delivers 350 Mbps. In our consistency testing, NordVPN, ExpressVPN, and Mullvad showed the least variation between tests. CyberGhost and PureVPN showed the most variation, with speeds fluctuating by up to 30 percent between test runs.

Impact on Streaming Quality

We also tested real-world streaming performance by loading BBC iPlayer, Netflix, and YouTube simultaneously. All top five providers delivered buffer-free 4K streaming. Lower-ranked providers occasionally showed brief buffering on 4K content but handled 1080p without issues.
